Randy Rathbun, 45, passed away from cancer, August 31st, 2012. Visitation will be held from 6:00-8 p.m. Thursday September 6, 2012 at Speaks Suburban Chapel 18020 E 39th Street, Independence MO. A private graveside service will be held by the family at Mt. Washington Cemetery at a later time.
Randy was born March 13, 1967 to Robert Russell Rathbun and Alice (Funkhouser). He graduated from Fort Osage High school in 1985 and from UMKC in 1992. Randy was currently employed at KCPT Channel 19 in Kansas City. He was hired as the IT guy and loved working at the station with so many great people and “wonderful toys” He previously worked at Middlewest Motor Freight Bureau for 14 years. Randy loved computers, amateur radios, scooters, telescopes, astronomy, woodworking, and old radios with tubes. He taught classes to amateur radio operators and especially loved teaching young children who showed enthusiasm for the hobby. He was known by his call sign NV0U. Randy was diagnosed with Stage 4 melanoma in Feb. of 2008 and after undergoing numerous surgeries and chemotherapy treatments since that time, he believed he had it on the run. Three months ago it was found to be in his brain and even radiation could not overcome the devastation. He was eternally optimistic about the prognosis and fought like a champion to overcome the odds right up to the last moment.
Randy was preceded in death by his father who passed of cancer in 2003. He is survived by his mother, Alice Scott (Stuart) of Independence, MO; two stepbrothers, one stepsister, aunts, uncles, cousins, and many beloved friends.
