Charles R. “Chuck” Abernathy, Sr., 82, of Independence, MO passed away on Saturday, January 2, 2021 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Chuck was born on April 13, 1938 in Douthat, Oklahoma to Bert and Veda Abernathy. He served in the United States Air Force from 1955 to 1959 and received his GED while enlisted. After his service, he attended NEO in Miami, OK for one year. Chuck dedicated 35 years at the Claycomo Ford Motor Company and retired in 1995.
Chuck married the love of his life, Patricia “Pat” (Wyatt) Abernathy on December 5, 1959 and they shared 61 incredible years together. Together they had three children: Tracy Ames, Charles “Robbie” Abernathy, Jr., and Richard “Richie” Abernathy. Chuck took extreme pride in all of his kids, grandkids and great-grandkids. His family would often smile and say, “His grandkids could do no wrong in his eyes.”
He treasured anything that involved his family. In their home, Chuck and Pat installed swings in the basement for the grandkids to play on. He spent hours and hours that turned into decades swinging his grandkids, taking them outside to play, and attending every single sporting event. He loved fishing, driving his pontoon, going to the library, genealogy, biking the Little Blue, playing family board games over the holidays, iced tea, and all desserts.
Chuck and Pat attended East Side Church in Independence, MO. Chuck had an incredible faith in God. He was preceded in death by both of his sons, Robbie and Richie. His family knows that they greeted Chuck with a big smile and a perfectly simple “Hi Dad.” Their reunion brings much comfort to Chuck’s family.
Chuck was also preceded in death by his parents, Bert and Veda Abernathy and sister, Mary Jo Wheeler. He is survived by his wife, Pat Abernathy; his daughter, Tracy Ames; his daughter-in-law, Tracie Abernathy; daughter-in-law, Mickie Abernathy; granddaughters, Melissa (Josh) Powers, Jennifer Ames (Shane Palmer), Alex (Michael) Atcheson; grandson, Jacob Abernathy (Brooke Jacobson); granddaughter, Logan Abernathy; grandson, Wyatt Abernathy; grandson, C.J.
