Thelma Avon (Horton) Acock, 96, passed away Saturday, December 12, 2015, at Jefferson City Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Jefferson City, MO. She was formerly from Independence, MO. A visitation will be held from 1:00-2:00pm Friday, December 18th at Carson Speaks Chapel; 1501 W. Lexington Ave, Independence, MO. A funeral service will follow at 2:00pm. Burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Independence, MO.
Thelma was born March 17, 1919, in Pattonsburg, MO as the daughter of Alonzo Owen and Mary Rachel (Armstead) Horton. She graduated from Pattonsburg H.S. in 1937. After graduation she moved to Kansas City where she worked at Montgomery Wards. There she met the love of her life, James Earnest Acock. They married on March 7, 1942 and together had one son. During the war years, Thelma worked at Lake City Arsenal inspecting shells for the war effort. After WWII, they lived in Independence for many decades. Thelma was a member of First Baptist Church, Independence, MO. She served as a PTO room mother at Southwest Elementary School and a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts, Troop 236. Thelma retired from sears and Roebucks, Co. working in the telephone order department for 17 years. She is survived by one son, William Jay Acock and wife, Linda of Russellville, MO; grandsons, Michael and wife, Jill of Columbia, MO; Sean and wife, Lori of Lohman, MO; and Seth and wife, Anna of St. Louis, MO; eight great grandchildren, Dakota Jordan Colton, Emily, Alexia, Simmone, Brooklyn, and Mila; and other friends and relatives. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, infant sister, Mary Elizabeth, and brother, Francis Horton.
