God called Lionel Aguilar home Monday, January 2, 2017. Visitation will be Thursday, January 5, 2017 at Speaks Suburban Chapel with the Holy Rosary being prayed at 6 pm and visitation after until 8 pm. A funeral mass will be celebrated at Noon, Friday, January 6, 2017 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 600 N. Liberty St., Independence, MO 64050 with burial to follow at Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery in Raytown, Missouri. Lionel was born October 22, 1937 in Kansas City, KS to Guadalupe and Dolores (Diaz) Aguilar. He remained a lifelong area resident, living in Independence, Missouri since 1982 where he was a familiar face around town. He graduated from De La Salle Military Academy in 1954 and was a member of the alumni association; he attended his 60th high school reunion in 2014. Lionel earned his Associates Degree from Kansas City Junior College in 1956 and then proudly served in the US Marine Corps from Aug 1956 -Aug 1958. Lionel retired from TWA after 40 years at their KCI office location including many with perfect attendance. His work at the airline allowed him to pursue his passions of traveling and photography and he enjoyed taking his family on domestic and international trips. Lionel was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church where he was a liturgical reader for many years. Lionel was an avid reader, enjoyed keeping up with the news and sports and staying active. Lionel always had a smile and encouraging word for everyone. He was devoted to his family and faith and will be deeply missed by many. Lionel was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Kay. He is survived by his children, son Ralph Aguilar and his wife Debbie; daughters Erin Aguilar and Lucy Aguilar; three beautiful grandchildren Kaiya, Mya, and Kaemon Aguilar as well as 5 younger sisters, Alicia Andrews, Becky Lindblom, Gloria Carson, Ginny Specker, and Margie Richardson and their families.
