Betty Allen, 90, of Independence, MO, passed away Saturday, December 13, 2014. Betty was born on January 8, 1924 to William Irvin “Doc” and Elizabeth “Lizzie” (Dobson) Bates in Albia, Iowa. Betty knew at a young age that she wanted to devote her life to helping others. When she graduated from high school, she pursued her dream of becoming a nurse. In 1945, Betty moved to Independence after accepting a nursing position with the Independence Sanitarium and Hospital. Betty then met the love of her life, Fred M. Allen. They were married on May 9, 1949 at the Stone Church. To this union a daughter was born, Kara Sue. Fred called the Stone Church “Betty’s other house” because she spent so much time there. She was truly God driven. Betty had a servant’s heart, devoting her life to her church, patients and to her family. Always encouraging her family to follow their dreams, and supporting them in their journey. She will be forever missed by many. Survivors include; daughter, Kara Johnson (Charlie); grandchildren, Kari Dausey, Krystal Johnson, and Aaron Johnson; sister, Byrle McCombs; and 2 great grandchildren. Betty is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Fred, and 7 brothers and sisters. Visitation will by held on Friday, December 19, 2014, from 9:00 - 10:00 am, with the Service following at 10:00 am, at Speaks Suburban Chapel. Entombment will be in Mound Grove Mausoleum.
