(Mary) Gwen Evans Amsberry, 97, of Independence, died Friday, June 27, 2003. Graveside services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 3, at Mound Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 2, at Speaks Midtown Chapel. Mrs. Amsberry was born July 16, 1905 in Lucas, Iowa. She taught school in Iowa for 22 years, specializing in reading and primary grades. She lived and taught phonics in Iran while her husband served with the government. They later managed the Double J Resort in Arkansas. She married Rolla Amsberry in 1937 and had three daughters. Gwen was a life long member of the Community of Christ (RLDS) Church. She belonged to PEO over 60 years and was a member of Chapter LE of Blue Springs, MO. Gwen was preceded in death by Rolla, daughters Jean Hurshman and Gwen Cordova. Daughter Lou Phelps and husband Harold, and son in-law Lloyd Hurshman, all of Independence, survive her. Nine grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren also survive her. The family thanks the staff at The Groves Care Center and hospice for the loving care extended to Gwen.
