Mary L. Atwell, 92, of Lee’s Summit, MO, passed away Tuesday, April 5th 2016. A visitation will be held from 10:00 – 11:00am Monday, April 11th, 2016 at Speaks Suburban Chapel. A funeral service will follow at 11:00am at the chapel. Burial will be at Johnson County Memorial Gardens.
Mary was born May 7, 1923 in Seldon, Long Island, New York, to Frank W. and Gertrude (Thieme) O’Bleness. She married Norman Jerome Atwell, Sr., on December 28th, 1944. She worked for Sears, then for Modern Handcraft, Inc as a mail sorter for 27 years, then for Price Chopper as a sacker for 15 years before formally retiring in 2007. She was a life time member of the Community of Christ Church. She and her life partner, Joseph Conaghan enjoyed Royals baseball, traveling, and being with family. Mary enjoyed bowling in leagues, crocheting pieces for her loved ones, baking pies for family gatherings, and doting on her grandchildren. Her family remembers her wonderful and bubbly personality. This woman was of small stature but of a big heart!
Survivors include daughters, Julia A. Urton of Kansas City, MO; Barbara J. Combs of Fulton, KS; Shirl J. Atwell of Louisville, KY; grandchildren, Jenny Parkhurst (ED), Laticia Urton, Maggie Urton, Christine Cruce (Greg), Michael Dugan (Claudia), Daniel Dugan, Victoria Dugan, David Atwell, Karen Williamson, and Jeannie Winter; great grandchildren, Jason Parkhurst, Sarah Boyert, EJ Parkhurst, Jeff Parkhurst, Michelle Dugan, Jennifer Dugan, Tony Espanol, Jordyn Watts, Stephanie Watts, Steve Watts, Kiera Kasey, Carly Dugan, Jordan Dugan, Morgan Dugan, Kyle Burch, Anthony Williamson, Josh Winter, and Adam Winter; great-great grandchildren, Lexi Parkhurst, Gage Boyert, Haley Dugan, Andon Ray Dugan-Schneikles, Corban Burch, James Kasey, Ellen Winter, Marshall Winter and two other great-great grandchildren. Mary was preceded in death by her siblings, George A. O’Bleness, Sylvia Sizer, and Frank O’Bleness; husband of thirty one years, Norman; companion of ten years, Joseph; sons, Marvin L.
