Delmus Eugene Bailey, 84, passed away on February 12, 2016. A visitation will be held from 9:30-11am Friday, with service beginning at 11am, both at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St in Independence. He will be laid to rest with full military honors in Missouri State Veterans Cemetery, Higginsville, MO at 1:00pm Friday.
Delmus was born on July 25, 1931, in Keysburg, KY, the youngest of nine children, to Billie and Zula Mae (Davis) Bailey. He joined the US Army at the age of 19, and spent over 20 years serving his country.
He completed combat tours in Korea and Vietnam. As a decorated veteran he was authorized to wear:
The United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with five Bronze Service Stars, The Korean Combat Infantry Badge, two Good Conduct Medals, the National Defense Service Medal, the United States Occupation Medal for service in Berlin Germany, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, two Bronze Stars with Oak Leaf Clusters, and a Meritorious Unit Citation.
During his service he was stationed in Ft. Campbell, KY; Turkey; Ft. Huachuca, AZ; Ft. Lewis, WA; Berlin, Germany; Sacramento, CA; Baumholder, Germany; and Ft. Knox, KY.
In 1956, he married Hettie Ann Gray-Duncan; to this union were born four children. Upon retiring from the Army as a Chief Warrant Officer, he began working for AT&T and Southwestern Bell in North Kansas City as an administrator, from which he retired after 20 years.
He then went to work for the Blue Springs School District as a school bus driver. Delmus was actively involved in his church, and was a Deacon at Plaza Heights Baptist Church in Blue Springs.
He received his Bachelors Degree in Business Administration from Park College in 1981.
In his spare time he loved fishing,exploring his family's genealogy, reading and working on business ideas.
His survivors include his wife of 60 years, Hettie; children, Bobbie Bailey, Evetta Bailey, and Michele Bailey-Tucker; grandchildren, Tarl Jason Bailey, Samson Bailey, Nathan Bailey, Julian Bailey, Arianna Bailey, Takka Dunn, Briana Dunn, Delmus Wayne Cantrell, and Shawn Cantrell. He was preceded in death by his sons, Delmus Bailey and Leonard Bailey; and eight siblings, Bill, James, Leonard, Cecil, Charles, Ethel, Thomas, and Thelmus.
