Hettie Ann Bailey was a preacher’s daughter, born to Eva Gray Duncan and William Arlester Duncan in Russellville, Kentucky on September 30, 1937. She attended Knob City High School in Russellville and was graduated in 1956. She married Delmus Bailey on December 9, 1956, and for the next twenty years embarked on a whirlwind adventure that included living in Ft. Huachuca, Arizona; Ft. Lewis, Washington; Berlin, Germany; Sacramento, California; Baumholder, Germany; Ft. Knox, Kentucky and finally, the Kansas City, Missouri metropolitan area.
She raised four children in short order: Leonard (deceased), Bobbie, Evetta and Michele. While her soldier faithfully served his country in Korea, Turkey, and Viet-Nam, she was the “General” on the home front, keeping everyone in line and under tight control. The single enduring lesson that she tried to impart was that there is no color, race or religion that separates us, but rather Army Green that binds us all.
Hettie died peacefully on Monday, February 28, 2022.
She is survived by three children, Bobbie Bailey (wife Tatiana), Evetta Bailey, and Michele Tucker (husband Gary); five grandchildren, Tarl Jason Bailey, Samson Gregorian Bailey, Nathan Gregorian Bailey, Julian Bailey and Arianna Nicole Bailey. She was preceded in death by her husband, Delmus, her son Leonard Bailey, and three siblings, Dorothy, Mae Margaret and William.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, March 13, from 2:00 to 4:00pm at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St in Independence. She will be laid to rest with her husband and son in Missouri State Veterans Cemetery, Higginsville, MO at 1:00 pm Monday, March 14.
