Joyce Bailey

February 11, 1926 — September 15, 2016

Joyce Cowan Bailey passed away on Thursday, September 15, 2016, peacefully at The Groves in Independence, MO.

Joyce was born February 11, 1926 in Ransom, Ness County, KS. She is predeceased by her husband Robert “Bob” Bailey, her parents Austin & Bertha (Christian) Cowan, her sister June Ronga & her brother Benn Cowan, as well as her daughter Marsha Bailey, and two great grandchildren Layla Owens & Malachi Apley. She is survived by three children, James (Rebecca) Bailey, Kathleen (Ted) Apley, Bruce (Carolyn) Bailey, and daughter-in-law Beverly Meremonte, all of Independence. She leaves behind 7 grandchildren, Aaron (Erica) Bailey, Angela (Darren) Coffman, Steven Bailey, Khristopher (Debbie) Apley, Katrina Apley, Katie Bailey and Timothy Bailey, all from the Kansas City area. She also had 11 great grandchildren: Heidi, Caleb, Heather, Warren, Brandon & Grant Coffman, Sean & Maddie Bailey, Shelby Bailey, Alexa Ingham and Dillon Apley.

Joyce lived through several historical eras in American History. She grew up during the Great Depression and Dust Bowls in western Kansas. She worked at the Pratt Whitney aircraft plant near the close of WWII – think of Rosie the Riveter. She met her husband right after the war while attending K-State in Manhattan, KS. They bought a house on the GI Bill in Shawnee, KS, where the family lived and thrived in the 50’s through the 70’s, where life was centered around church activities at Shawnee Drive Community of Christ (then RLDS). Joyce was largely an at-home mother, but later worked in a school cafeteria as a baker. Joyce & Bob enjoyed 3 years of full-time RVing, traveling to Florida, Nova Scotia and the Southwest before Bob had a stroke and they returned to the KC area. Joyce was a member of South Crysler Restoration Branch, and during her lifetime was active in Women’s Department, Zions League, and various kitchen ministries. Joyce spent the last 8 years as a resident of The Groves, enjoying dominos until one week before her death.

The family would like to express sincere appreciation to all the staff at The Groves (Rosewood) for her excellent care and the Hospice staff who attended to her in her last days.

She was loved by all and will be greatly missed. Her Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 24, 2016 at South Crysler Restoration Branch at 16101 E. Salisbury Rd, Independence MO with visitation at 1:00 and the service at 2:00pm.
