Marjorie Nix Balfour Martin, 96, of Independence, MO, passed away Saturday, April 22nd at The Fountains. The life of Marjorie will be celebrated in a service at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 26th at Trinity Episcopal Church, 409 N. Liberty, Independence, MO 64050. Private burial in Woodlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the church or Grace Hospice. Born in Butler, MO to William J. and Madge (Keller) Nix in 1909, she moved with her family (2 brothers, Carl and Winston, deceased) to Kansas City, MO and later to Chicago where she studied music at the Chicago Musical College. She has been a resident of Independence, MO since 1938. In 1942 she married Harold Balfour (deceased 1969) and in 1976 married Forrest Martin (deceased 1994). Mrs. Martin has been active in supporting the Nelson Art Gallery, Junior Service League, Bingham Waggoner and Vaile Mansions, Stadium Club, Independence Symphony, The National Frontier Trails Center and The Harry S. Truman Library Institute. She was a friend of Harry and Bess Truman and has contributed memorabilia and memories to the Trinity Episcopal Church Archives and to the Truman Library. Since 1953 she has been active in the Altar Guild, The Trinity Archives and The Bess Truman Memorial Library . She is survived by many friends including John Cox, Brian Warr all of Independence, MO; Duke and Martha Claiborne of Jefferson City, MO; her loving caregivers Catherine Brown, Nancy Roberts and Jamie Burnett and many friends at The Fountains.
