Barbara Elaine Harper

September 22, 1946 — December 19, 2023

Barbara Elaine Harper passed away on December 19, 2023 while surrounded by her family, in Independence, Missouri. She was 77 years old. Barbara was born on September 22, 1946, in St. Louis, Missouri to Kenneth and Della (Hollis) Verdict.

Barbara attended Van Horn high school and proudly earned the National Jr. Achievement award. She continued her education in accounting. Barbara's career spanned many years as she worked as a bookkeeper before transitioning to computerized accounting. That led her to her career with Commerce Bank for over 12 years before retirement.

Beyond her professional endeavors, Barbara made a lasting impact on the lives of countless young individuals through her involvement with scouting. She served as a Den Mother for Cub Scouts and was known fondly as the "Girl Scout Cookie Mom." Barbara's commitment to guiding and nurturing young minds left an impression and shaped the lives of many.

In addition to her career and volunteer work, Barbara held an insatiable curiosity for the world around her. She embarked on numerous adventures throughout her life, traveling to different corners of the globe for over 29 years while her husband was serving in the United States Air Force. From exploring castles in Europe to indulging in crystal factories and wine tours in Germany, Barbara embraced diverse cultures with open arms. She found joy in participating in the volks marches in Europe while appreciating the beauty of nature. In quieter moments, she enjoyed floral arranging, reading books, solving puzzles, creating beautiful greeting cards, and watching birds with a particular fondness for red cardinals. Barbara delighted in classic movies from Turner Classic, the Hallmark Channel and the Murdock Mysteries series.

Barbara will be dearly missed by her loved ones and cherished friends. Her warm smile, gentle words, and nurturing nature brought comfort and happiness to all who had the privilege of knowing her. She taught us the importance of love, compassion, and the value of family bonds.

Barbara is survived by her children; son, Richard Harper (Erin); daughter, Ronda Bacu (Michael); mother, Della Verdict; sisters, Claudia Bowen, Deborah Bellamy and sister in law, Bunny Harper; dear friend, Barbara Jean Walls Correll; 6 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ronald and her father, Kenneth Verdict.
