Donald Gary Barnhart passed away June 6, 2017.
Gary was born in Kansas City, Missouri November 23, 1938 to his parents, Don Lee and Mary Bernice Barnhart.
Gary grew up in Independence, Missouri graduating from William Chrisman High School in 1956 where he played football and was on William Chrisman High School’s first golf team as a freshman.
Gary won many Kansas City Junior Golf Association events including 1955 Junior Championship. He also tied for First Place in Junior Chamber of Commerce State Championship at Mexico, Missouri. At that time he accepted an offer to play for the University of Missouri Golf Team.
Gary attended the University of Missouri where he was a member of the Psi Kappa Psi Fraternity. After three years at Mizzou he transferred to North East Missouri State. He and his golfing teammates finished 2nd in 1960 and 1st in 1961 of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Conference Championship. That same year Gary was a Medalist. North East Missouri finished second in the NCAA Division II regionals. Gary finished second in the individuals where he picked up two silver NCAA Division II medals.
Gary continued to play in State and local golf tournaments. Seven times he qualified for the Missouri State Amateur, the last being at Blue Hills Country Club, his home course in 1975. Gary was also a member of Wolf Creek Country Club and Lakewood Oaks Country Club of Lee’s Summit, Missouri.
After graduation, he was employed by a Mortgage Banking Association firm. Gary was in the Mortgage Banking business for 28 years; however, his first love was Real Estate Development and Residential Home Building. Over the years from 1965 to 2009 Gary developed many subdivisions in Independence, Blue Springs and Eastern Jackson County. He won two Pick of the Parade Awards. He was President of Eastern Jackson County Builders Associates 1971 to 1973. He also was an area Vice-President for the Kansas City Home Builders Association. In 1988 Gary met his best friend, sweetheart and partner for life, Anita Covert.
Gary wrote all of this, but Anita said what she and Gary loved was crappie fishing, boating, trips, cruises, grandchildren and friends. He had fun golfing and spending times with our friends.
Gary loved history and he passed away on D-Day, June 6, 2017.
