Maurene Martha Bartlett, 103, of Independence, MO, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 20, 2014 at the home of her daughter. Maurene, known as ‘Peg” to many of her friends, was born December 31, 1910, to Earl Guy and Vera Pearl (Evans) Chalfant in Meadville, Missouri. As birthdays passed, she always reminded everyone that “If I was born a day later, I would be a year younger.” She had three sisters, Charlotte Waits, Maxine Wyrick, and Betty Moore, of which she was the eldest. She married Harold Russell Bartlett, the Love of her Life, on June 24, 1929 in Meadville, Missouri, and raised two children, Jack Bartlett of Bentonville, Arkansas, and Sherri Mullins of Independence, Missouri. She located to Independence in 1940 where she was employed at Bundschu’s Department Store of Independence, Lake City Arsenal, and later at Western Auto Headquarters in Kansas City. Maurene was a Meals on Wheels volunteer in Independence, Missouri for over sixteen years which continued through her one hundred and first birthday. She was also a member of the Stone Church Community of Christ (RLDS) for over 50 years. She was truly “One of the Greatest Generation” and will be greatly missed by all. She is preceded in death by her husband Harold and two sisters, Charlotte and Maxine. She is survived by her sister Betty Moore of Laclede, MO, son Jack Bartlett (Sally), daughter Sherri Mullins (Jerry), 5 grandchildren, Michelle Booher (Paul), Kimberly Shultz (Jeff), Garry Mullins, Shannon Bartlett, and Dana Young (Edward), and eight great-grandchildren: Cory Mullins, Ashlyn Young, Kaci Booher, Karli Aterburn (Jonny), Spencer Shultz, Chandler Young (Melissa), Holly Shultz, and Malorie Young. Maurene was known as “Bartie” to all her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and was anxiously awaiting her first great-great-grandchild. Services will be held on Saturday, September 27th at 10:00 am, with a visitation at 9:00 am at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E 39th St, Independence, MO 64055. Graveside service will be at Meadville Cemetery, Meadville, MO at 2:30 pm, Saturday, Sept. 27th. Memorial contributions may be made to Stone Church Endowment Fund or to Crossroads Hospice.
