James Bateman, 77, Independence, MO passed away Thursday, December 6, 2007 at the Kansas City Hospice House. A visitation will be from 6-8:00 PM, Monday, Dec. 10 at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St., Indep. Graveside Services will be 1:00 PM, Tuesday, Dec. 11 at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville.
James was born June 13, 1930 in Springfield, MO to James and Berniece (Owen) Bateman, Sr.. He grew up in Sugar Creek, MO and attended Northeast High School before joining the U.S. Air Force. He served in the Air Force for 23 years before his retirement and then worked for the Bayer Corporation and as a school crossing guard for the Independence Police Department . He was involved with Boy Scouts and the Mic-O-Say tribe, enjoyed golfing, and watching baseball and football. Most importantly, James loved his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
James is survived by his wife of 52 years, Fern (Kitchen) Bateman; three children: Donna L. Nixon and Mark, James R. Bateman and Shari King, and Charles S. Bateman; four grandchildren: James J. Bateman and Lisa, Jeremy A. Bates and Emily, Jacob C. Bechtold, and Sarah R. Bechtold; and four and a half great-granchildren.
