Oneida Beeman Lorimer passed away December 15, 2017 at Wellsville Retirement Community in Wellsville, KS.
Oneida Lorimer was born October 10, 1924 to Jesse A. and Ruthanna Kellerstrass Beeman in Kansas City, MO. She attended Frances Willard Elementary School, graduated from Paseo High School, and received a B.A. degree (Teaching Biology) and M.A. degree (Teaching Biology) from KCU, now UMKC. She received a M.S, degree (Plant Morphology) from Purdue and an Education Specialist degree from CMSU, also. She did additional graduate studies at Fairleigh Dickinson Marine Biology Station, St. Croix, Virgin Islands, Western Michigan U. and KU. In 1981, Mrs. Lorimer retired from teaching in the Independence School District system after 36 years where they named the 11 acre area by Chrisman High School “The Oneida Beeman Outdoor Classroom”. In 1970 she received the Outstanding Biology Teacher’s Award for the state of Missouri from the National Association of Biology Teachers, and in 1979 the Outstanding Science Teachers Award by the Missouri Academy of Science. Mrs. Lorimer taught at CMSU Extension Center, at UMKC, and she taught at Blue Valley High School in Kansas from 1981 until 1986.
She was a lifetime member of the Retired Teachers of Missouri, member of the Retired Teachers of Independence, National Association of Biology Teachers, Phi Kappa Phi, Mary Paxton Study Class, PEO, and former member of Kappa Kappa Iota, and Sigma Delta Epsilon (Graduate Women In Science). Mrs. Lorimer was a deacon and elder at the First Presbyterian Church of Independence, and volunteered at Independence Regional Health Center.
She is survived by a stepson Bill Lorimer and his wife Patsy of Independence, MO; her sister-in-law Dorothy Beeman of Englewood, FL; nephew David Beeman and wife Donna of Ridgefield, CT; nieces Melissa Spratt and husband Dr. Dennis of Ottawa, KS, Rebecca Ryckert and husband Brad of Paola, KS; great nieces and nephews Allison, Kendall, and Charley Beeman, Kristin Shafer (Matt), Adam Spratt, Sara Amaral (Chris), Jill Clavin (Chris), Reilly Reis (Danny) and Braden Hourigan; and great-great nieces and nephew Ella, Olivia and Luke Shafer.
A private burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery followed by a memorial service at First Presbyterian Church of Independence at 2pm on Thursday, December 21, 2017. A visitation will follow the service.
She was preceded in death by her husband Harold Lorimer whom she married August 21, 1997 and her brother Charles “Bud” Beeman.
