Beverly Jean "Terry" Bartels

June 7, 1934 — January 14, 2025

Independence, Missouri

Beverly Jean “Terry” Bartels, passed away on January 14, 2025, in Overland Park, Kansas. She was 90 years old. Terry was born and raised in Iowa where she met and married the love of her life, Lyle Bartels. Soon after, they moved to Independence where they built the foundation of their marriage for the next fifty one years and opened their business, Mr. Tires, in Kansas City. Terry managed the financial side of the business while being a devoted mother to their three children. She took such pride in her role as a wife, mother, and homemaker. Terry was a devout parishioner at St. Mary Catholic Church. Faith was a cornerstone of her family life, and she instilled that belief in her children. The Lake of the Ozarks held a special place in Terry’s heart, becoming her favorite retreat with Lyle to enjoy early mornings taking in God’s beauty. It didn’t take long for the Lake to become their personal sanctuary, and Terry and Lyle upgraded their weekend cabin to their dream retirement home, where there was sure to be a fish fry with all the “fixins,” a cool drink and good company. Terry and Lyle were instrumental in starting an outdoor Mass in their community, which quickly grew in popularity and attendance. This led them to be a part of building Our Lady of the Snows in Climax Springs to accommodate the expanding church. Today it is still a longstanding and thriving church. Terry was very proud of this shared accomplishment and thankful to be a part of it along with close friends, family, and parishioners. Terry later joined St. Mark Catholic Church after the death of her husband and moving back from the Lake to a new home in Independence. Left to honor Terry’s legacy are her children and their spouses: Becky and Steve Bouck, Gary and Diane Bartels, and Jodi and Greg Kelly; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her sister, Juanita Hansen, brother and sister-in-law, Carl Evans and Avis James, and brother-in-law Harlan Bartels; and many nieces and nephews. Terry is preceded in death by her parents and beloved husband. Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 20, 2025, at St. Mark Catholic Church, 3736 S. Lee’s Summit Road, Independence, Missouri 64055. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. with Mass following at 11:00 a.m. Burial to follow in Mt. Washington Cemetery. Donations may be made in her name to Kansas City Hospice or to Visiting Nurse Association dba VNA Home Health & Hospice.
