Billy Joe “Bill” Bodine, 80, passed away on December 28, 2020 in Independence, MO.
Bill was born on November 15, 1940 in Marshfield, MO to Robert Paul Bodine and Ruby Pearl (Deckard) Bodine. His family relocated to the Kansas City area when Bill was young, and he later attended East High School. On June 24, 1960, he married Sandra Scanlon, and to this union six children were born.
Bill spent his career as a truck driver for forty years, retiring in December 2010. He worked for United Auto Transport and National Steel (which later became EMJ). Although he spent many hours on the road, he was committed to family life as well. He could often be found spending a lazy afternoon on his boats, where he’d fish and listen to country music. He liked keeping his mind sharp with games like Pogo, Rook, and word search puzzles, and he coached girls’ softball for years. He instilled his love of cars to his son, Mike, and was always so proud of Mike’s racecar.
He attended Susquehanna Baptist Church with Sandra, and they both loved spending time with old friends including John & Linda Franco, John Higgins Jr., and Paul Henrich.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years Sandra Bodine; children Michael Bodine (wife Becky), Dana Collins (husband Tom), Robynn Carter (husband Joe), Kerri Malcolm, and Brianne Martin (husband Jeremy); grandchildren Jayson Bodine (wife Amber), Daniel Bodine, Kristine Hawkins (husband Jesse), Eric Collins, Ryan Collins, John Higgins III (wife Cody), Clinton Higgins, Ashtyn Malcolm, Bryan Malcolm Jr., Colinn Martin, Anna Akers, Alec Carter, and Dustin Henrich; great-grandchildren Austin Bodine, Bella Hawkins, Kinsley Hawkins, Levi Higgins, John Higgins IV, Olivia Higgins, Harrison Akers, Rowan Carter, Kevin Berry Jr., Kaine Berry, Kaiden Berry, and Macklin Irwin; nephew John Calfas, niece Cindy Pacholke; and many extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his son David Mark Bodine; grandson Trenton Chase Martin; parents Paul and Pearl Bodine; and sister Mickey Calfas.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, January 3, 2021, from 6-8pm, at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St. Due to county restrictions, the funeral service is closed to the public, but will be recorded and posted to his webpage after January 4. Bill will be laid to rest in Floral Hills Cemetery.
