Mabel Maria Bowser, 100, Thornton, CO. died July 9, 2004. Services will be 10 am, Sat., July 17 at Speaks Suburban Chapel, Independence, MO; interment at Floral Hills Cemetery. Visitation will be 7 - 8:30 pm, Friday at the funeral home. The family suggests contributions to the Community of Christ Temple Fund, Outreach International, the Hospice unit of your choice, or the American Cancer Society. Mabel was born on March 7, 1904 in Nortonville, KS to Samuel and Sarah (Stanturf) McKamy. In 1908, the family moved to St. Joseph, MO. As a child, Mabel worked with her family at their confectionary store. She graduated from Benton High School in 1922, having majored in commercial courses. She was employed by an insurance company where she later met her future husband.
On Oct. 8, l927, Mabel married George Bowser in St. Joseph. They moved to Kansas City following their marriage, where Mabel worked a secretarial position for a supply company. In 1934, their son, George Roger was born, followed by their daughter, Jean Marie in 1937. In 1946, Mabel and George founded Home Comfort Products, a mattress manufacturing business in Independence, MO where they worked until their retirement in the late 1970�s.
Mabel was a long-time member of the Ridgewood Congregation of the Community of Christ and the Independence Knife and Fork Club. In retirement, Mabel and George enjoyed traveling, participating in church activities and spending summers at the mountain cabin in Nederland, CO. Following the death of George in Dec., 1993, Mabel continued to live in Kansas City, until moving to a retirement center in Thornton, CO. in 2002 to be closer to her son and daughter.
On March 7, 2004, Mabel was honored on her 100th birthday with a celebration in Thornton, CO. which was attended and acknowledged by hundreds of well-wishers. In a tribute to her milestone birthday, she was awarded a proclamation by the Mayor of Thornton, CO. declaring March 7, 2004 as "Mabel Bowser Day� in the City of Thornton.
Mabel was preceded in death by her husband; two brothers, Elton McKamy and Ralph McKamy, and a grandson, Brian (Buddy) Sheffler. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, George and Virginia Bowser, Thornton, CO; her daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Gary Sheffler, New Raymer, CO; three grandchildren and their spouses, Denise and Jack Breidenbach, Iliff, CO; George M. (Monty) and Alison Bowser, Greensboro, NC; and Holly and Erik Hansen, Thornton, CO; and three great-grandchildren, Quincy and Grace Hansen, Thornton, CO; and Luke Bowser, Greensboro, NC.
