Vera was born on August 2, 1926 at home in Kansas City, MO, the only child born to Elmer and Marcella Fields. They lived through the years of the Great Depression. Vera was united in marriage to J.C. Bridge on July 27, 1949. He preceded her in death on July 10, 1996 after 47 years of marriage. J.C. built their family’s home on the lot next to Vera’s parents’ home in Independence. Living next door to grandparents, was like Heaven to their children. We have wonderful memories of the days when we were all together. Vera also took care of her aging parents while living next door. Vera’s greatest joy came from being a wife and mother to their four children. She went to work at Mt. Washington Elementary School Cafeteria in the Kansas City Missouri School District, so that she could be near her children. She worked there for 25 years, retiring as the cafeteria manager in 1991. Vera arrived at the school in the early morning hours to make delicious meals from scratch for several hundred students and teachers every day. Everyone raved about how marvelous the food tasted. You could smell the delicious aroma throughout the entire school building every day before lunch. Vera loved Jesus and was a dedicated Sunday School teacher in the church nursery at Mt. Washington Baptist Church for over 40 years.
During her retirement years, Vera enjoyed being actively involved in the Fairmount Community Center in Independence and other senior groups. Her favorite activities were spent line dancing, attending red hat celebrations, playing bingo, making crafts and taking day trips. Vera had a beautiful personality, was fun to be around, loved to laugh, and was blessed with having many friends.
Vera is survived by two of her four children, son, Bob Bridge of Independence, MO, daughter, Pam Trenchard (William) of Lee’s Summit, MO; daughter-in-law Shirley Bridge of Broomfield, CO; four grandchildren, Megan Ferrier (Scott), Blake Bridge, Jennifer Trenchard, David Trenchard; great-grandson Jaxon Ferrier; and cousin Dr. John McDonald. Vera was preceded in death by her husband, J.C. (1996), son, Fred Bridge (2012) and daughter, Judy Bridge (2014). Vera was a loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She always had a never-ending supply of love in her heart for everyone. Vera was a blessing to so many people, and she will be dearly missed! Well done, good and faithful servant!
