Earl Junior Brittain, 91, of Independence, Missouri, passed away Monday, May 29, 2017, at home.
Earl was born January 16, 1926, to Earl and Mildred (Felker) Brittain in Guilford, Missouri. He served in World War II in the Fighting 69th Division in Germany. After the service, Earl and his bride Dorothy Reinschmidt Brittain moved to the Kansas City area. Earl worked as a switchman for the Kansas City Southern Railroad and then for Prudential Insurance Co. He was a loyal member of the Elks Lodge #2509 and the American Legion, and a member of Eastgate Christian Church. He took great pride in all his children and grandchildren. Earl loved telling a good story, fishing, volunteering at the VA Hospital, and gardening.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, his parents, sisters Violet Parmelee, Helen Brittain and Mary Rougeau.
He is survived by his daughters Patricia and husband Ben Simmons (Lee’s Summit) and Mary Brittain (Blue Springs), and son James Brittain (Kirksville); sister Claire Carter Jones (Tarkio); grandchildren Sarah Simmons, Scott and wife Patti Simmons, Ryan and wife Kelly Kassen, Brittain Cottle, Andrew Cottle, Jared and wife Liz Brittain, and Ashlee Brittain; great grandchildren Grant and Brecken Simmons, Micah, Anna Abigail and Titus Brittain, and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Earl’s family is especially grateful to St. Luke’s Hospice and neighbors George and Dottie Doering.
A visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m., with memorial service at 10:00 a.m., both Tuesday, June 6, at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St. with private inurnment with military honors following at Mount Washington Cemetery.
