Herbert Nelson "Herb" Brown

September 18, 1937 — January 12, 2021

Herbert Nelson “Herb” Brown of Independence, MO, an avid runner, finished his final race on earth and went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 12, 2021. He was 83 years old. Herb was born on September 18, 1937 in Kansas City, Missouri, to Vernon and Agnes Brown. He graduated from Center High School in Kansas City, MO, in the class of 1954. Herb worked at CertainTeed in Kansas City, Kansas as a maintenance crew chief for 54 years. On his 50th year of being employed with CertainTeed, the company sent Herb on a trip to Europe. He was a wonderful husband, father, brother, step-father, uncle and great- uncle. If there was anything that Herb loved to do the most, it was running in a running club called the Northland Runners for over 30 years. He enjoyed spending time with his family for birthdays and holidays. As a devout Christian, Herb was a proud member of the Grace Community Church in Lee's Summit, MO and was very involved in the congregation. In the past few years, Herb would meet with others at McDonald's for coffee and breakfast. It was there, where he met his wife, Norma. They were married on October 7, 2017. Herb was an extremely active man, who enjoyed attending the YMCA regularly for swimming and exercise and he will be dearly missed.

He is survived by his wife of the home, Norma Brown; son, Jeff Brown; daughter, Alisha Brown; sister, Georgia Brady; step-daughters, Cathy Shireman, Connie Stowell and Susan (Rob) Barton; niece, Cynthia (Richard) Irwin; nephews, Scott and Craig Brady; great-nephew, Taylor Starks and great-niece, Haley Starks. He was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Janet S. Brown and his parents, Vernon D. and Agnes R. Brown.

A visitation will be held on Monday, January 18, at Speaks Suburban Chapel in Independence, MO, from 5-8:00pm. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a private service will be held for family. Herb will be laid to rest at Mount Moriah Cemetery in Kansas City, MO.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the Salvation Army.
