Jewel Wanda Brown, 89 of Independence, MO passed away Friday, April 27, 2018 at her residence. Cremation is planned and a memorial service was held at 12:00 p.m., Sunday, April 29, 2018 at the Carson-Speaks Chapel, 1501 W. Lexington Ave., Independence, MO 64052. Jewel was born February 4, 1929 in Akron, Ohio to Charles Henry and Irene Estelle (Johnston) Shadel. She moved to Independence at a young age and graduated from William Chrisman in 1949. She had worked as an optician for Douglas Optical later known as King Optical and later ran the switchboard at the Jones Store. She was an avid reader and enjoyed collecting dolls, books and rings. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great great grandmother who raised 6 children on her own. She was an elder in the Cornerstone Congregation of the Community of Christ. Survivors include; 2 daughters, Debora Day and husband Vic and Letha Harman and husband Walter all of Independence, MO; 4 sons, Eddie Brown and wife Debbie of St. Louis, MO, Duane Brown of Michigan, David Brown of Kansas City, MO and Christopher Brown and wife Wallissa of Mountain View, AR; 2 sisters, Gloria Directo of Independence, MO and Delores Hurst of Buckner, MO; 19 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by 2 grandchildren, Courtney Brown and Sumer Day.
