John William Brown, Sr., 87, of Lee’s Summit, MO passed away on
Dec. 25, 2016 at the John Knox Village Hospice House, Lee’s Summit, MO. Services will be private followed by interment at Mt. Washington Cemetery, Independence, MO. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions to the John Brown, Sr. Memorial Fund, c/o Blue Ridge Blvd. Christian Church, 3625 Blue Ridge Blvd., Independence, MO 64052. John was born Oct. 10, 1929 in Jameson, MO and graduated from Gallatin, MO High School where he was named Outstanding Athlete in 1948. While attending Tarkio College where he played basketball and football, he met his wife of sixty-six years, Elizabeth A. Melton of Bethany, MO at her high school volleyball game. John served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. After his service, John and Elizabeth settled in the Kansas City area to raise their family. He worked for Business Men’s Assurance Company (BMA) for thirty years. He was a Boy Scout leader with Troop 139 and a member of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. John and Elizabeth have been members of the Blue Ridge Blvd. Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) for fifty-six years. John is survived by his wife Elizabeth A. Brown, Lee’s Summit, MO; sister Betty Tingler, Gallatin, MO; sons John W. Brown, Jr. and wife Janet, Kansas City, MO; David L. Brown and wife Marna, New River, AZ; grandchildren William H. Romines, Jr. and wife Amiee, Elizabeth C. Hunt and husband Cory, John W. Brown, III, Joshua C. Brown, Margaret E. Iddings and husband Brandon and seven great-grandchildren.
