Gladys Irene Burkett, of Independence, MO passed away on Sunday, July 18th, 2021. She was 94 years old.
Cremation is planned with an inurnment and graveside service at Mount Washington Cemetery in Independence, Missouri, 10am Tuesday July 27, 2021.
Gladys was born in Henderson, North Carolina on February 13, 1927 to Hunter J. and Julia (Ross) Roberson. Gladys grew up on a farm with her parents and 11 siblings. After graduating high school Gladys worked as a nurse’s aide and in 1970, moved to Independence, Missouri. After moving to Independence, Gladys decided to further her career by attaining her associates at Independence Sanitarium and working as an LPN as Rest Haven, retiring in 1988. Gladys loved her westerns and reading books, often falling asleep with them, she claimed she didn’t discriminate and loved all subjects; however, some may say she was biased and loved a good romance the best. Gladys use to sew as a necessity in her younger years, a talent she continued to use into her adult life sewing practical pillows and aprons.
Gladys is survived by her sons, Jerry (Nancy) Baker, Bill Burkett ; 9 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and many extended family and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Hunter and Julia Roberson; husband, George A. Burkett; daughter Judy Tuley; granddaughter Michelle and siblings Clarence, Grovey, Howard, James, Willard, Melvin, Wheeler, Doris, Lizzie, Nellie, and Barbara.
