Donald Butler Jr

April 18, 1951 — February 23, 2018

Donald Ford Butler, Jr., 66, of Kansas City, MO, passed away Friday, February 23, 2018. Don was born April 18, 1951 in Warrensburg, MO to Donald Ford and Betty (Taylor) Butler. He graduated from Truman High School and University of Missouri. He then studied taxation law at the Cumberland School of Law at Samford University in Birmingham, AL.

Don was a dedicated attorney who put in long hours each tax season representing his clients. Faithfully, during the third week of April he closed his office and journeyed across the United States by car to visit friends. Other passions included golf, cuisine, traveling with his wife Susan, trout fishing, and yoga. Don is remembered fondly for his zest for life, story-telling paired with humorous anecdotes, sharp wit, kindness, and guidance.

Diagnosed with medullary thyroid cancer in 2016, he continued to pursue his passions but made adjustments. He received tremendous support from his yoga friends, members, and staff at Woodside Health Club. He also enjoyed the attentions of Bandit, the cat that neighbor Meredith allowed to make therapeutic daily visits.

Don respected and was grateful to have been supported by a comprehensive team of doctors and staff at The University of Kansas Cancer Center. His family would also like to recognize the compassionate end-of-life care given by the staff from the KC Hospice House.

Don is survived by his wife of 30 years, Susan Butler; his aunt, Doris (Butler) Whitton and uncle, Rex Whitton, Jr. (recently deceased); his cousins Rex M. Whitton III, Julie Whitton Weedman (Chuck), and Katie Whitton Finkle (Greg); and numerous friends, clients, and professional colleagues.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm on Monday, March 5, 2018 at Speaks Suburban Chapel in Independence, MO. In lieu of flowers, Don asked that memorial contributions be made to “Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, Inc.”, an organization dedicated to the physical and emotional rehabilitation of disabled veterans by teaching them fly fishing skills www.projecthealingwaters.org
