Robert Edward “Bob” Calvert, 87 of Independence, MO passed away Saturday, August 25, 2012 at Centerpoint Medical Center. Services will be 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 31, 2012 at the Carson-Speaks Chapel 1501 W. Lexington Avenue, Independence, MO 64052. Burial with full military honors will follow in Lobb Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday evening at the chapel. Donations may be made in his name to St. Matthew United Methodist Church, 2415 R.D. Mize Rd., Independence, MO 64057. Bob was born June 29, 1925 in Finley, IL to Elza Clinton and Mary Elizabeth (Gurtner) Calvert. He spent his early life in Illinois before moving with his family to Thayer, MO and later to Independence in 1945. At the age of 17 he, and his brother Stan, enlisted in the Navy together and he proudly served his country during WWII. During his time in the Navy he served aboard the USS Quick and had 17 convoy trips over seas. After the Navy he worked for over 30 years as a field technician at Allis Chalmers Manufacturing until he retired in 1987. Prior to that he had worked at Lake City Ammunition Plant and for Glendale Farm in Independence, MO. He enjoyed sports, especially basketball and had coached for a number of years as well. Bob was known for taking care of family members during illness and tough times. He was a charter member of St. Matthew United Methodist Church and remained an active member having served in various capacities at the church. He was also a life member of the Tirey J. Ford Post #21 American Legion and Supper Club. He was married to Pauline Boone on June 19, 1949 and enjoyed many years together until her passing on January 8, 2006. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Janet Kay Calvert on August 24, 2008. Survivors include; a daughter, Betty Ann Crews of Tigard, OR; 3 grandchildren, Matthew Calvert Crews and wife Katie, Jordan Nathanael Crews and wife Christie and Rachel Elizabeth Flores and husband Alberto; a brother, Leslie Calvert and wife Marge of Oak Grove, MO; a sister, Thelma Quick of Harrisonville, MO; 3 sisters in law, Alice Boone, Virginia Calvert and Linda Calvert; a brother in law, John Boone and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
