Barbara Casey

May 23, 1939 — January 31, 2014

Barbara Ann (Blatt) Casey, passed to her next life on January 31, 2014. A visitation will be held from 1:00-2:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 5, at Speaks Suburban chapel. A memorial service will follow at 2:00 p.m. A private inurnment will be held at Woodlawn at a later time. Barbara was born May 23, 1939 to Cecil and Lois Blatt in Wilkinsburg, PA. They moved to Independence, MO where her siblings were born: Nancy Ruth (Blatt) Marshall and Cecil George Blatt, Jr. After attending Rock Creek Elementary School and Central High School, Barbara married and lived in various other cities, including Wichita, St. Louis, and Hurst, TX. While in Wichita, she brought two daughters into the world. Barbara later returned to Independence and went to work at the Independence Sanitarium and Hospital, where she stayed for 27 years. While working there she accumulated many friends due to her outgoing and interesting personality, and also attended the Penn Valley Medical Records Technican Program. A former hippie, Barbara appreciated the unconventional. She had a strong belief that peace is possible. She loved her books, classic movies such as Metropolis, Egypt, Africa, Napoleon Bonaparte, Bob Marley, and her cat, Jack. She was a true friend to the needy and the underdogs, going so far as to root for the Oakland Raiders (but never the Chiefs). Gone before are her mother and father, and her sister Nancy. She is survived by her brother George and his wife Marci of Boerne, TX; daughters, Tara Ann Casey-Crawford and husband Michael of Nixa, MO; and Jill Lee Casey-Weyer of Kansas City; her beloved grandsons, Ethan Weyer and Liam Weyer; aunt, Betty Blatt; nephews, Scott and Jeff Marshall; and her cousins. She leaves many other lives she has touched over the years, especially Amanda Dione Scott-Pallanes. In lieu of flowers, donations to the animal welfare organization of your choice would honor Barbara’s love and concern for animals in need.
