Mary Frances Catalano (Combs)

Mary Frances (Combs) Catalano, 77, of Independence, MO, passed away on Thursday, March 25, 2021. Following cremation, a service will be held at 10am on Thursday, April 1, 2021 at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St, Independence, MO 64055. Mary’s final resting place will be at Mt. Washington Cemetery. Mary was born to James and Mary (Pryor) Combs on May 11, 1943 in Kansas City, MO. She was one of eight children and spent all her life in the Kansas City area. After high school, Mary worked and from her first marriage, had a daughter and son. Then, in 1969, she met and married Anthony Catalano, the love of her life. Anthony had three sons from his previous marriage, and the couple, together, had a daughter, blessing the couple with 6 children, between the two. Mary attended Avila University, where she graduated in 1981 with her bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Development. In the later 1980’s she opened her very own daycare, Bright Beginnings Education Center, where she was the director for over 20 years. Mary loved children. Childcare was not only a career that she loved, but one that she was completely dedicated to. Mary was also an avid reader and doll collector. As a member of the Independence Doll Club, she volunteered for many events at the Bingham-Wagner including decorating the carriage house for Christmas for many years. Mary loved traveling with Anthony and their close group of friends. She was known to read three or four books at a time; and finish them. Quickly. Mary loved to travel with husband, Anthony, making Christmas cookies with the grandchildren, and was an amazing cook. She was contributor to several charities, including the “Rotary Exchange Club”, and was also an active member of the “Red Hats”. Mary had a fantastic sense of humor and was exceptionally smart. Survivors include, her loving husband, Anthony; children, Anthony Catalano Jr., Vincent Catalano, Carrie McCord, Jack McCord, Steve Catalano, and Cynthia (Shane) Parr; grandchildren, Chris Catalano, Jeff Catalano, Augustin Catalano, Caleb Parr, Landon Parr, and Tara Parr; great-grandchildren, Pierce, Scarlett, Maddox, and Gavin Catalano; siblings, Libby Hunter, Deborah Proffit, and Tom Hunter. Mary is preceded in death by her parents; and five siblings, James, Brenda, Ted, William, and Johnny. Mary also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews, as well as many dear friends.The family would like to send a special "Thanks" to Lumicare Hospice for all of the support and kindness they gave their family during this time.
