Richard L. Chandler, 72, a long-time resident of Independence passed away on October 14, 2006 at the Foxwood Springs Living Center, Raymore, MO. A visitation will be held from 6-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 17, at the Carson-Speaks Chapel, 1501 W. Lexington, Independence, MO 64052. A Tribe of Mic-O-Say service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday at the chapel followed by the traditional service also in the chapel. Burial to follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. Richard was born on February 8, 1934 in Independence to Frank and Velma Chandler. He was raised in Independence and graduated from William Chrisman High School in 1952 where he excelled in theatrics. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Independence. Richard graduated with a B.A. Degree from Missouri Valley College in 1956. After serving in the U.S. Army for two years, Richard worked as a social studies teacher for the Raytown School District for nearly twenty-eight years. Richard served for many years as the varsity swim coach for Raytown South H.S. It was the joy of his life. Another proud part of Richard�s life was his association with the Boy Scouts of America. Serving in numerous leadership positions he devoted countless hours to the organization. Richard was particularly proud of his long membership in the Tribe of Mic-O-Say serving as its Medicine Man. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Velma (Main) Chandler; a brother, Louis Warren; and a cousin, Louie Chandler. He is survived by his niece, Diana (Warren) Moult, Blue Springs, MO; a cousin, Ed Chandler, Independence, MO; and was so proud of his extended family and many long-time friends that included Bill Esry (deceased); and Mrs. Trudy Esry of Independence, as well as their sons, Jon and Kip Esry.
