Dr. John William Chapman, of Independence, MO, passed away on Monday, August 1, 2022. He was 97 years old. A visitation will be held from 3-5pm on Sunday, August 7th at Speaks Suburban Chapel; 18020 E 39th St.; Independence, MO 64055. Funeral service will be at 10am on Monday, August 8th, also at Speaks. Interment with full military honors will follow at Mound Grove Cemetery in Independence.
John was born on April 1, 1925, in Independence, MO. After graduation from William Chrisman High School, John served in the United States Army as a radio operator and technician during World War II. After honorable discharge, John attended Warrensburg College, receiving a degree in engineering. He worked for 24 years at Lake City Ammunition and retired to attend Cleveland Chiropractic College. John enjoyed his own chiropractic practice for 30 years before retiring and working at Walmart for 10 years.
After his time at Walmart, John stayed active as a volunteer at Centerpoint Medical Center, Truman Library, City of Independence Health Department, and the Knife and Fork Club. John also sang in the Messiah Choir for 55 years and was a member of the Masonic Lodge. He was a life-long devoted member of Stone Church in Independence.
John is survived by his beloved wife, Alice; his children, Bill Chapman, Sue Smith, David (Lisa) Landon, Dennis (Theresa) Holder, Ronald Holder, son-in-law, Johnny Turner; 14 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by daughters, Debbie Rhoads and Karen Turner; and son-in-laws, Jim Rhoads and Paul Smith.
