William "Bill� Chappelow
William "Bill� Chappelow, of Independence, MO passed away on Saturday, November 26, 2005 at his home. Bill was born on December 8, 1913 to Ray and Velva Chappelow. A lifetime resident of Independence and a leader in community development, he was preceded in death by his parents Ray and Velva Chappelow; brothers Raymond and Fred; and Mary Dean, wife of 43 years. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Joan; a sister, Mary Truitt and husband, Leo, of Independence; daughter and son in law, Willetta and Tom Latimer of Springfield, MO; daughter and son in law, Janet and Gene Belovarac of Los Angeles, CA; son and daughter in law Mike and Marty Chappelow of Lee�s Summit, MO; son and daughter in law, Kent and Sandy Chappelow of Lee�s Summit, MO; twelve grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. During WWII he served as an instructor in the building of the B-25 bomber in KC, KS and aircraft engineer at Pratt and Whitney plants in Hartford, Connecticut and KC, where he was later involved in personnel and employment. After the plant closed he became an officer and office manager of Central Surety and Insurance Corp. in KC for many years. He had also worked as Director of Communication at Crown Bremson Photo Company in KC. He served a temporary appointment as City Manager of Independence in 1957. He was Administrative Manager of the Independence City Power Dept. retiring in 1980. He served as president of the K.C. Personnel Forum and of the National Administration Assoc. in 1960-61. He was named in the Ninth Edition of Who�s Who in the Midwest and in Best�s Who�s Who in Insurance. He served as chairman of the Utility Advisory Board of Independence, was on the Board of Directors of the Independence Community Heartland Foundation, and had served on the city Tax Increment Financing Commission. He was an organizer and the first president of the Association for Industrial Development for Independence and served on the Independence Council for Economic Development. He was former Board Chairman of the First Methodist Church in Independence, and is a member of the Blue Ridge Methodist Church. He was a member of the Lions Club and troop committee chairman of Boy Scout Troop 278. A visitation will be held from 6-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 29, at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. The service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wed., at the chapel with burial at Woodlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Soc. Or the Blue Ridge United Methodist Church Building Fund.
