Mercedes Chipe-Tola, 88, Independence, MO, went to be with our Lord on September 4, 2005 with her five children and loved ones by her side. Mass of Christian Burial will be 9:30 am, September 6, 2005, at St. Mary�s Catholic Church, Independence, MO. Interment will be in Mound Grove Cemetery. A prayer service was held at 6:30 pm, Monday, at the Carson-Speaks Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cancer Action or Hospice of Independence. Mercedes was born October 19, 1917, in Guayaquil, Equador, the third of nine children to Modesto Tola and Margarita Sanchez. On December 28, 1935, she married Ramon Chipe. In 1961, she emigrated with Ramon to the United States, taking residence in New York. The remainder of her life was spent in Independence, MO. Mercedes was preceded in death by her parents,, her husband, her sister Angela and brothers Victor, Umberto, and Fernando. She is survived by daughters Norma Salazar and husband Juan, Ronkonkoma, NY, Margaret Perez, Grandview, MO, Guisela Ohlenschlager, Massapequa, NY, Carmen Chipe Benedict and husband Ron, Independence, MO, son Jose Chipe and wife Laura, Louisville, KY, sisters Sara Gherady, Ana Arvelo, and Abigail Alvarado, brother Vincent Tola, 12 grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. Mercedes was kind and loving, devoted to God, her husband and her family. She was a major force in all our lives and taught us the importance of living a faith-filled life, putting family first and earning an education. We will miss her, her wise counsel and her great sense of humor. Mama, we will always love and remember you in our hearts.
