Sylvester R. "Syl� Coleman, 87, of Independence, MO passed away Friday, September 29, 2006 at Rosewood Health Center. Services will be 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 3, 2006 at the E. 39th Street Community of Christ. Burial with full military honors will be in Mound Grove Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8:00 p.m., Monday evening at the Speaks Suburban Chapel. Donations may be made to Outreach International. Syl was born February 6, 1919 in Independence, MO to Garfield and Elsie (Corn) Coleman. He served as a minister for the Community of Christ church from 1948 until he retired in 1984. His appointments included; S.E. Illinois, N.W. District in Iowa, Hawaiian Islands, Southern and Northern California, Omaha, NE and Independence, MO. While with the Community of Christ he served as Missionary, Stake President, President of Seventy, Regional Administrator for several districts and retired as an Evangelist. He was a member of the E. 39th Street Community of Christ. He was a member of the Optimist Club serving as District President and the Temple Ambassadors. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, gardening and photography. He was a U.S. Army Air Corp veteran of WWII having served with the Flying Tigers in the China/Burma/India Theatre from 1943-46. Mr. Coleman was married to LaVona Crabb on October 27, 1939, she survives of the home. Other survivors include; his children, Sylvia Dennis and her husband Tony of Boise, ID, Dennis Coleman and his wife Jo of St. Joseph, MO, and Cindy Taylor and her husband Don of Independence, MO; a sister, Elma Dean Stark of Independence, MO; seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Derrick Cline in 2006, three brothers and five sisters.
