Charles Vernon “Charlie” Colvin, 73, of Independence, MO, passed away on December 29, 2020.
Charlie was born on March 14, 1947 in Kansas City, MO, the only child of Vernon E. and Isabelle (Howard) Colvin. He graduated from Lexington High School in the class of 1965 and married Jeannie Peel on June 18, 1972.
Charlie was a machinist by trade and was employed as a first helper in the steel-melting shop at Armco Steel. He retired from there after 33 years of service. He then went to work at the MCC Business & Technology Center in the HVAC Lab. His breadth of knowledge helped countless students learn necessary skills, and he retired from the college after a decade. He liked tinkering, repairing, and rebuilding cars and engines. He even constructed a dune buggy and promptly took it to the hills to test its top speed!
He was a member of the Steelworkers Union and the Lexington Baptist Church.
While visiting Hawaii one year, Charlie happened to take a SCUBA lesson. This single incident ignited a passion for diving, and throughout his life he did over 500 ocean dives – solo and with his nephews – and saw countless sunsets and sea creatures. Every year he anticipated deer-hunting season. He hunted all over Missouri, but in recent years focused his efforts on his property in Stover. His 10-point buck remains proudly displayed in his home.
Survivors include his wife Jeannie Colvin; sister-in-law Mary Servi; brother-in-law Jim Servi; nephews Joe Servi and Chris Servi (wife Amy); great-nephews Brandon Servi and Zach Servi; and great-nieces Blake Servi and Reese Servi. He was preceded in death by his parents Vernon and Isabelle.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, January 2, 2021, from 9-10am, at Speaks Suburban Chapel in Independence. The funeral service will follow at 10am; due to county restrictions, seating is limited. Interment will take place in Woodlawn Cemetery.
In honor of Charlie, the family suggests contributions be made to either the Salvation Army or Animals Best Friends.
