Helen Grace Colyer passed away on Friday, October 1, 2010 at Rosewood Nursing Home in Independence, Missouri. Private burial will be held Tuesday, October 5th at Mound Grove Cemetery. A Memorial Service will be held at East 39th Street Community of Christ, 15006 E. 39th Street at 2:00 p.m. on October 7th, 2010.
Helen was born September 30, 1913 in Eagle Grove, Iowa. She married Alden C. Colyer in 1934. He preceded her in death in 1984. Also preceding her in death were her parents, Glenn and Bessie McVicker, two brothers and four sisters.
Helen’s first job out of the home was at Macy’s in downtown Kansas City. She later worked at William Chrisman High School for 9 years and in the dietary department at the Independence Sanitarium Hospital for 12 years. She loved her church and volunteering at the Laurel Club. She loved planting a large garden and canning all of her produce. She also enjoyed sewing and made the uniforms for HiBoy Drive In for many years.
Her survivors include three sons, Robert A. Colyer (Lynne) Encinitas, California, James A. Colyer, Trenton, Missouri, David L. Colyer (Karen), Buckner, Missouri and four daughters, Joyce F. Porterfield (Duane) Independence, Missouri, Marilyn C. Rogers (Noel) Independence, Missouri, Janice H. Zimmerman (Gary) Independence, Missouri and Barbara A. Colyer, Independence, Missouri. Also surviving are two brothers David McVicker (Harriett) Independence, Missouri, Daniel McVicker (Carla) Bevier, Missouri, and one sister Emma Jean Ross, Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. 23 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren. No flowers, please. Contributions can be made to Outreach International.
