Calvin “Gene” Combs, 70, of Kearney, MO, formerly of Lamoni, IA, passed away on Sunday, June 21, 2020.
A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. He will be laid to rest in Rose Hill Cemetery with full military honors. In his memory, the family encourages donations to be made to Lamoni Parks and Recreation, 190 S. Chestnut St., Lamoni, Iowa, 50140. Please include "Gene Combs" in the memo line.
Gene was born on December 16, 1949, in Red Oak, Iowa. He was the son of Ruth M. (Quick) Black and George Black. His family moved to the Lamoni area when he was a young boy, and graduated from Lamoni Community Schools in 1968. Gene was drafted into the US Army during the Vietnam War. He was stationed in the regions of Vietnam and Indochina before obtaining the rank of Specialist 4 and honorably discharged. Upon returning home, he earned his Bachelor's degree in Outdoor Education & Recreation from Graceland College.
On July 10, 1984, he married Devy Ledbetter Hagan. He enjoyed a 30-year career at Lamoni Municipal Utilities (LMU) and retired in 2013.
He loved coaching little league baseball, reading, and working crossword puzzles. He also connected at a deep level to the beauty of nature when he spent time hunting, fishing, or playing a round of golf. Gene will be remembered as a humble, selfless man, who cherished the simple experiences of life over material aspects. He never sought the spotlight, but wholeheartedly uplifted and supported his family through his words and his actions. Gene was a longtime member of the Community of Christ faith.
Gene is survived by his wife of nearly 36 years, Devy; children Carrie Dalrymple (husband Nathan), Aaron Randall Hagan (wife Megan), Dylan Evan Combs, and Katelyn Rae Combs; grandchildren Ethan Dalrymple, Emma Dalrymple, Ryder Hagan, Zoey Hagan, and Blakely Hagan; mother Ruth Black; siblings Ken Combs (wife Pam), Sandra White (late husband Jim), and Mike Black (wife Marcia); brother-in-law Ron Tellier; "blood brother," Dennis Silver, and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Gene was preceded in death by his step-father George Black; sister Donna Combs-Tellier; and special nephew Alfred Pinegar.
