Elizabeth Jean "Betty" Cook (Lang)

January 6, 1934 — May 18, 2016

Elizabeth Jean (Betty) Cook (82) died peacefully May 18th, 2016.

A prayer service will be held at St. Matthew Apostle Catholic Church Wednesday, June 1st at 6:00pm followed by the visitation. Catholic Funeral Mass will be Thursday, June 2nd at 10:00am followed by a funeral luncheon.

Betty was born January 6th, 1934 in Sedalia, Missouri to the fun loving Mildred Brandt and WWI soldier Conrad Lang. She was the third girl forming the legendary Lang Girl Trio. She graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1952. She met the love of her life Don Cook that summer when he was home on leave from the United States Navy. When Don arrived at the State Fair, he was introduced to the very popular Lang girls. Betty won his heart and they were married on November 25th, 1954. They quickly began their family having Carla and Clint in Sedalia then moving to Kansas City where they added Kelly. Betty raised her children at their homes on Greenwood Road and then Herrick Ave where she enjoyed lifelong friendships with neighbors. Betty was very active at St. Matthew’s Church. Among other things, she became known for her infamous green bean casserole. Her favorite activity however was singing in the church choir for over 50 years. As her children grew, she began a career with the Gillis Home for Children in 1979. For over 20 years, she ran a very efficient and productive office but if one were to visit about 2:00 each afternoon, they would find Betty taking her daily 20 minute power nap. In her retirement, Betty continued to serve her community.

Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her sisters Delores Ash and Virginia Palmer and her husband Don.

She leaves behind many people who love her dearly including her children Carla (Don) Duryee, Clint (Debbie) Cook and Kelly (Rick) Meyers and her loving grandchildren Courtney (Bobby), Cameron, Kelsey, JD, Danny and Caroline. She also leaves behind her brother-in-law, Jay Ash and her dear friend David Johnson to whom we will be forever grateful for his loving compassionate care.

Betty instilled in us many life lessons; one was to show much appreciation for the blessings in our lives. In that spirit, we would like to thank all the nurses and staff at the Kansas City Hospice House for their loving care during her final days.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to KC Hospice House at 12000 Wornall Road KCMO 64145.
