John R. Coonrod, 85, of Independence, MO passed in peace on Friday, March 11, 2016. John was born May 1, 1930 to John Russell and Thelma (Knorr) Coonrod. On April 18, 1953 he married the love of his life Phyllis Jean Rauch. John attended East High School in Kansas City and received his BA in transportation at UMKC. John worked as a transportation manager for 26 years with Owens Corning Fiberglass and as a Regional Vice-President with Cardinal Transport for 10 years. He enjoyed golfing and fishing but his passion was spending time with his family. He was a Godly man that was a member of the United Methodist Churches for many years. John was a truly selfless man who loved people and put his family first his entire life. He will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife of 62 years; son, Neil (Marilynn) Coonrod; daughter, Linda (Larry) Hook; son, John (Martha) Coonrod; daughter, Sandra (Scott) Traver; twelve grandchildren; and ten great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Marilyn Coonrod Aufdemburge. A visitation will take place from 6-8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 16, at the Speaks Suburban Chapels, 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, MO. A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 17, at Maple Park Cemetery in Aurora, MO. Donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
