Lucy Dora Cooper, 85, Independence, MO passed away at her home surrounded by loving family on August 21, 2012.
Visitation will be 1:00-2:00 p.m. Saturday August 25, 2012 at Speaks Suburban Chapel; 18020 E. 39th St. Independence, MO. 64055. A celebration of Lucy’s life will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial to follow at Oak Ridge Memory Gardens. Memorial contributions are suggested to Vitas Hospice.
Lucy was preceded in death by three sisters, Lorene (Elmer) Hopkins, Arlene Dwyer, and Ruth Raines.
Lucy will forever be remembered as a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and friend. She was born April 16, 1927, in Kansas City, MO. She attended high school at William Chrisman. Lucy met Doc at Montgomery Ward where she worked for 2 years. She worked briefly at Ward Battery before becoming a homemaker. She loved to cook and made the best pies. Lucy loved her garden and to watch the birds outside her window. While her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were growing up she went to all the baseball & football games. She was a room mother for her son and daughter’s classrooms and a Girl Scout leader. Lucy was very blessed and giving of herself. She will be sadly missed by everyone who knew her.
Lucy is survived by her loving husband Winfred “Doc” of 67 years; son Jerry Cooper and wife Sandy; daughter Cindy Mitchell and husband Andy all of Independence; grandchildren, Jackie Cooper of Charlotte, NC, Eric Mitchell and wife Jennifer of Blue Springs, Shawn of Independence; great grandchildren, Brendan, Ashlyn, Jade and Raegan; brother, Jim Magee and wife Dot of Minnesota; half brother, Glen Mayberry and wife Linda of Eldorado Springs; half sisters, Connie Mayberry of Edmond, OK, Toni Messick and husband Dennis of Eldorado Springs and many nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to express their appreciation to the 5th floor staff at Centerpoint Medical Center, Research VITAS Hospice and Senior Helpers for their special care. Our family and all who had the privilege of knowing Lucy were blessed.
