Cooper Thomas Sumpter, 21, of Grain Valley, MO, passed away on Tuesday, October 15, 2024. Funeral service will be held at the Carson-Speaks Chapel on Saturday, October 26, 2024, at 2:00pm. Visitation will be from 1:00-2:00pm, and burial to follow in Mt. Washington Cemetery.
Cooper was born March 12, 2003, in Kansas City, MO, to Matthew Sumpter and Sara (Revella) Boutte and has been a lifelong area resident. Cooper graduated from Van Horn High School in 2021. He worked at Camping World for the last few years as a porter in Grain Valley, MO.
Cooper grew up in Independence where he was active in many sports and loved being outside. Cooper was a natural born leader and athlete; he was competitive and liked to win. Cooper’s love of sports started with baseball at a young age and he played varsity baseball all four years of high school. He used his baseball skills to excel as a goalie and played varsity soccer all three of the years he played soccer. Cooper was the goalie when the team went to the State Championship. He also played on the varsity basketball team and went to State in 2021 where the team took third place. Cooper received Conference Goalkeeper of the Year in 2020 among many other achievements and accolades during his high school years.
Cooper was a believer in Jesus Christ, a responsible and hardworking man, and a loyal family member and friend. Cooper was a single father to Noah, his “Best Boy in the Whole Wide World.” He was a loving and devoted daddy and an excellent provider to his son. When he wasn’t working or spending time with his son, he was fishing or wanted to be fishing. Cooper will be greatly missed by all who love him and knew him.
Cooper is survived by a son, Noah Sumpter, of the home; his parents, his mother and stepfather, Sara and Matthew Boutte; his father and step mother, Matthew and Sarah Sumpter; 2 brothers, Carson Sumpter and Sherwood Sumpter all of Independence, MO; 4 sisters, Mattie Sumpter of Independence, MO, Amatay Boutte, Josephine Bower and Gabrielle Boutte all of Sibley, MO; grandparents, Larry and Maria Revella and Pamela Sumpter all of Liberty, MO; a great grandparent, Gary Viola of St. Clair Shores, MI; 3 uncles Seth (April) Revella, Michael (Megan) Sumpter, Jr., and Travis Sumpter; and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandfather Michael P. Sumpter, Sr. Cooper was also chosen family of the Garcia home in Blue Springs, MO.
