Janis Cowick, 87, of Independence, MO, passed away peacefully on January 9, 2021 after a battle with colon cancer. Janis was born on December 22, 1933, in Wakenda, MO, the third child of Harry and Geneva Sanders.
After graduating from Wakenda High School in 1951, she moved to Carrollton, MO and worked at the cookie factory. Janis married Frankie Cowick on April 11, 1953 in Hardin, MO. Their first child Kevin was born on June 1954, then Kim in November 1959, and Mitchell in 1964.
Janis babysat children and ironed for people until her children had all made it to jr. high. She then went to work for the Kansas City School District as “the salad lady” at the Van Horn High School cafeteria. After retirement, Janis and Frankie spent all their time attending sporting events of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and traveling. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ Restoration Branches.
Janis is preceded in death by the love of her life, Frankie Cowick, her son Mitchell Cowick, her parents, Harry and Geneva Sanders; a sister, Vickie Sowers; and two brothers, Lynn Sanders and Travis Sanders.
She is survived by her son, Kevin and wife Millie of Sedalia, MO, daughter, Kim and husband Bob of Greenwood, MO; 10 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
