Gerald Alexander "Jerry" Cox

Retired Detective Gerald Alexander “Jerry” Cox, 84, passed away on February 28, 2020, in Kansas City, MO.

Visitation will be on Saturday, March 14, from 9-10am, with funeral service to follow at 10am, both at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St. in Independence. He will be laid to rest in Blue Springs Cemetery. Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in his honor.

Jerry was born on August 2, 1935, in Kansas City, MO, the son of Efton Alva Cox and Frances Louela Alexander Cox. He graduated from East High School in the class of 1953. He was appointed to the police department on July 16, 1957. His assignments included #2 District Station, #3 District Station, Auto Theft Unit, Crimes vs Properties Unit, Central Property Crime Unit, Central Crime vs Property Unit, Case Review & Court Assistance Unit, and East Crimes vs Property Unit, which was his assignment at the time of his retirement. On May 21, 1983, he married Rose Mary Chaudet Trussell in Independence, MO, and they had 35 happy years of marriage before her passing in 2018.

Post-retirement, he served an additional 20 years with NATB/NICB. He also was a member of the Church of Christ – East Local Branch. He enjoyed playing golf, listening to opera music, and cheering on the Kansas City Chiefs and the Royals. He was kind, quiet, laid-back, and will be dearly missed by his family and brothers and sisters in the police force.

Survivors include his daughters Sarah Burnett of Sugar Creek, MO, Elizabeth Gardner (husband Lee) of Farmington, NM, Nancy Stafford of Olathe, KS, and Kathleen Clay of Kansas City, MO; sons David Cox (fiancée Nicole Forristal) of Blue Springs, MO, Timothy Cox (wife Lisa) of Houston, TX, and Steven Cox (wife Beth) of Leawood, KS; eleven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and many extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife Rose Mary Cox; son Kenny Cox; and granddaughters Jennifer Cox and Tyler Cox-Rivera.
