Steve Cox

March 28, 1949 — June 29, 2021

On June 29, 2021 the world lost an amazing man. Steve Cox died at home, surrounded by the love of his family; the center of his universe. He was 72.
Glen Steven Cox was born March 28, 1949 in Independence to Glen Marion and Bess (Ames) Cox, who both preceded him in death. He was proud to spend his entire life in Independence, attending Ott Elementary, Chrisman Jr. High and William Chrisman High School Class of ’67. After high school, he worked as a pipefitter through Local #533 Pipefitters Union. He was a pipefitter foreman and general foreman for more than 20 years. Steve was without a doubt most proud of the last fourteen years of his career, as a Stadium Operations Manager for the Kansas City Chiefs. Steve has been called “the best boss I ever had” by more employees than we could ever count. His respect for others stood out; regardless of the person or position he respected everyone and gave them the benefit of the doubt. He created a culture of hard work, compassion and dependability with his staff. Through the years, everyone learned to lean on him no matter the situation.
In 2002 Steve married his soulmate Cheryl, and together with their four daughters they have made a lifetime of memories. Steve, Dad, Papa, Pops – he was the center of his nine grandchildren’s worlds and he had a special relationship with each of them. He attended baseball, soccer, football, cheer, musical theater and dance events and cheered for them all, and somehow found a way to make their teammates feel like Papa was their biggest fan, too. He loved his sons-in-law “Bobby and Natie”, and has entrusted his endless list of duties to all of us into their hands.
Steve is survived by his wife of 19 years, Cheryl; daughters Stephanie (Bob) Holcombe, Darci Cox, Megan (Nate) Rodgers, Lauren Oryall; grandchildren Cooper, Kaitie, Jack, Henry, Sam, Matthew, Maclin, Nadia and Ava; Aunt Beverly Cox; sister Connie Cofer; many cousins, nieces, nephews and their children; and his honorary brothers Dale Weatherford, Ed Mossman, Russ Burton, Andre Bruce and Pete Penland. He was also preceded in death by his sister Glenda Eaton and stepfather James Frazier.
To know Steve Cox was to love him…we wish everyone could have, and be, a friend like him.
A memorial visitation will be held at Speaks Suburban Chapel in Independence, Missouri on Tuesday, July 6th from 5-8pm. Memorial service will follow on Wednesday, July 7th at 10am.
