Ruth Crossley, age 96, of Independence, MO, passed away on Wednesday, July 13, 2022, in Independence. Funeral services will begin at 10:00am on Monday, July 18, 2022, at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, MO, 64055, with private graveside services at Mt. Washington Cemetery, Independence, MO.
Ruth Crossley was born on March 30, 1926, to Henry and Alta Jenny (James) Carter in Kansas City, MO. She was one of nine children in the family. She attended school through the 8th grade in Lexington, MO. Following school, she worked as a Domestic for families in the Lexington area and then started working for Dunne Hill Shirt Factory making shirts for the Army during WWII. On March 18, 1946, she was united in marriage to James Crossley in Lawrence, Kansas, and three children were born to this union. She created a loving home for her family and then as her children grew up, she started working as a nurse’s aide at Elm Grove Elementary School. She later was the cashier in the cafeteria at Ft. Osage School for 10 years. Ruth hosted the Carter family reunions for over 50 years. She will be remembered for her visits with family and friends, watching Hallmark movie and Royals games, making quilts for her family and her talents of knitting, as well as her great dry sense of humor. She was a Den Mother while her sons were in Boy Scouts. Ruth and James had memorable trips to Hawaii that she often treasured. Grateful for having shared in her life are her three children, James (Crystal Frey) Crossley, Jeanette (Clifford) Huntsucker, Jerry (Brenda) Crossley; five grandchildren, Christopher (Dani VanBuskirk) Crossley, Kevin (Suzanne) Crossley, Lucas Huntsucker, Brian Cochran, Vaughn (Crissy) Cochran; six great-grandchildren, Kayla Cochran, Justin Cochran, Camryn Huntsucker, Emilie Huntsucker, James Page, Lucas R. Huntsucker; three siblings, George Carter, Joann (Dan) Oster, Mary Johnson and many nieces and nephews. Ruth is preceded in death by her husband, James on January 14, 1996; parents; and five siblings.
