David Richard Hopkins

April 17, 1949 — March 11, 2024

David Richard Hopkins, born April 17, 1949, in Smithville, Missouri to Charles and Loretta Pearl Hopkins, passed away peacefully on March 11, 2024, at Healthcare Resort of Leawood in Leawood, KS. 

David graduated from Penney High School in Hamilton, Missouri in 1967. He later attended Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville. David dedicated many years to the Social Security Administration, where his professionalism and compassion touched many lives.

An avid sports fan, David cheered on the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals. He enjoyed bridge, bowling, and playing the guitar. As a young man, he was proud to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout within the Boy Scouts of America.  David lived several decades in Independence, MO where he and his wife Beth made a life together.  Their mutual love for animals was evident through their countless rescues and care for dogs and cats.

David is preceded in death by his first wife, Barbetta Hopkins Shedden, his second wife, Beth Nesheim Hopkins, and his brother Charles (Mike). He is survived by his daughter Sheila Hopkins, stepdaughter Britta Kallevang, sister-in-law Muriel Hopkins, brother-in-law Mike Nesheim, and nieces Carrie, Sarah, and Wendy.

A graveside service will be held at 1pm on Wednesday, March 20th at Highland Cemetery in Hamilton, MO. Donations in his memory may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
