Edith Hirons Dennis, 95, Independence, MO passed away Aug. 10, 2017. Services will be 10 am, Tuesday, Aug. 15 at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, MO; interment at Maple Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 9 am before the service at the chapel. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions to the Susquehanna Baptist Church, 17800 Susquehanna Drive, Independence, MO 64056 or Veterans Community Project, 8900 Troost, Kansas City, MO 64131 veteranscommunityproject.org. which provides homes for homeless veterans. Edith was born July 22, 1922 in Fredonia, KS and graduated from Fredonia High School. She grew up on a dairy farm with a big family where she learned the meaning of hard work and sacrifice. While her husband was deployed overseas during WW II, she and her sister traveled to California by train where she became a real-life “Rosie the Riveter”. In the 1970’s she served as a sorority house mother at Baker University. She was a member of P.E.O. and of Susquehanna Baptist Church where she was very active until recent health problems. She enjoyed playing piano in her spare time and at Sunday school. We celebrate her long, full life but will miss her. Edith was preceded in death by her first husband Tom Hirons in 1973, two brothers and three sisters. She is survived by husband Ray Dennis, Independence, MO; sons Bob Hirons and wife Joan, Ft. Scott, KS; Frank Hirons and wife Lori, St. Croix, VI; daughter Sandi Garrison and husband Dan, Lake Waukomis, MO; step-son Dick Dennis and wife Cheryl, Kansas City, MO; step-daughter Janet Horton, Buckner, MO; sister-in-law Ruth Bauman, Neodasha, KS; brother-in-law Gerald Lance, OK; nine grandchildren: Mike Hirons and wife Julie, Michelle Stecklein and husband Mike, Leslie Craig and husband Scott, Scott Hirons and wife Alison, Lindsay Livengood and husband Rob, Steve Garrison, Kevin and Sarah Horton, Craig Horton, David and Danielle Dennis, Christy and Brandon Caine and many great-grandchildren and other family members.
