Lois Marie Doerr (Hammons)

November 16, 1942 — July 18, 2019

Lois Marie Doerr, 76, of Independence, Missouri, passed away Thursday, July 18, 2019, at her residence and surrounded by her family.
Lois was born November 16, 1942, in Hazard, Kentucky, to Travis Stanley Hammons and Clara Elizabeth (Martin) Hammons Jordan. She attended Westran High School in Huntsville, Missouri, and later graduated from the Kansas City School of Business. She worked as a case worker for the DFS in Missouri from 1976 until she retired in 2001. She married George Jerome Doerr in 1963, and in the 13 years they were together, they had four children.
Lois loved to create. She crocheted often, creating everything from doll dresses to afghans to pot holders. She decorated cakes every year for her children’s birthdays, always favoring the Barbie cakes where she could paint elaborate skirt designs in the frosting. She also loved God. Her Bible with its feathered pages could always be found on the bookshelf next to the couch or in front of her seat at the kitchen table, where she would sit and read from it every morning.
Lois was an animal lover, her house made full in later years by the dogs and cats she cared for. But it was her family she loved most. By far the biggest joy in her life was spending time with her children and grandchildren. Whether she was going shopping with her youngest daughter on the weekends, visiting car shows with her eldest son, watching her younger son’s newborn while he took his daughter to softball practice or speaking to her oldest daughter on the phone every week, thoughts of her family were never far from her mind.
Over the course of her life, Lois was a beloved sister, daughter, aunt, mother, grandmother and friend. She was preceded in death by her sisters Ada Howard and Donna Johnson; her brothers Robert Hammons and Eugene Hammons; and her parents. Survivors include four children: George “David” Doerr of Independence, Missouri; Tina Schroeder and husband Alex of Columbia, Missouri; Rebecca “Becky” Doerr of Raytown, Missouri; and Robert Doerr and wife Kelly of Independence, Missouri. She is also survived by her sister Mary Stoner and husband Ed of Benton, Missouri; her brother Roy Hammons of Moberly, Missouri; nine grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Cremation is planned with a memorial visitation to be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday evening, July 26, 2019, at the Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, Missouri, 64055.
