Irma R. Dona (Mosley)

October 12, 1929 — August 3, 2021

Irma R. Dona died peacefully at her home on August 3rd, 2021. She was 91.

Irma was the daughter of Hosea and Florence Mosley. Irma was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Lindy P. Dona and her brother Lawrence. She is survived by her brother Wayne Mosley (Judy) of Mount Airy, North Carolina and three children: Kathleen Akiyama (Dennis) of Long Beach, California; Bernadette Ashcraft (Scott) of Kansas City; and Anthony Dona (Lillian) of Dallas. She is also survived by five grandchildren and one great grandchild: Kathleen’s sons Sherman, Sam (Jen), and Steven Sparks and Anthony’s children Greg Dona (Atlee), and Stephanie Dona Herold (John Paul). Stephanie and John Paul have Irma’s one great grandchild, Belle Sophia whom Irma was able to meet last year.

Irma was born October 12, 1929 in Quincy, Illinois. After high school, she went to work for the phone company. She met Lindy in Chicago and they married a short time later at Great Lakes Naval base on May 14, 1949. They were opposites that attracted--Lindy the gregarious sailor and Irma the steady hand in all things related to family. Later, Irma and Lindy moved to the Kansas City area for Lindy’s work. She had a passion for Young Matrons but over time she came to devote herself unconditionally to her children. She was involved in Blue Birds, 4 H, ballet lessons, and little league, putting the needs of her children first and always emphasizing the need for education. When her children got older, she worked at the Jones Store for a number of years and later turned to real estate and had a successful career at Century 21 and then Re/Max until she was almost 75.

While neither Irma nor Lindy had the luxury of attending college, they were proud that all three children finished college. When her kids were grown, she became the consummate mother-in-law and grandparent. She and Lindy would babysit their grandchildren for weeks at a time allowing her children to take vacations and at the same time forming very strong bonds with all of her grandchildren. Irma was passionate about games, playing bridge and Mah Jong with enthusiasm. Irma loved cooking and being hostess for family and friends, particularly at holidays. The symphony, opera and ballet were some of her greatest joys.

Later in life, she and Lindy had the opportunity to take a number of trips to Europe. Paris was her favorite city. Irma loved her many pets. She had a special fondness for Lucy and Linus who kept her company at Bishop Spencer Place her last few years. Irma was a lifelong Catholic and has found her final resting place with God. On behalf of Irma, her family would like to thank all the caregivers and dogwalkers at Bishop Spencer Place for making her last years as comfortable as possible.
