Alice V. Draper, 93, Independence, MO passed away Aug. 13, 2013. Memorial services will be held at 2:30 pm, Sunday, Aug. 18 at the Stone Church, 1012 W. Lexington Ave., Independence, MO 64052; cremation. Visitation will follow the service. Alice was born Dec. 8, 1919 in Denver, CO. She grew up in Hawaii. She graduated with Music Honors from Graceland College where she served as Orchestra Concert Mistress and sang in the Graceland Choir. She earned her Masters in Education from CMSU and enjoyed a thirty-six year career in education. She taught at Hanthorne Elementary School in the Independence School District for the majority of her career. She also had served as a substitute teacher in Hilo, Hawaii for a time. She retired in 1983. She was a member of Stone Church where she sang in the choir. She was a member of Sigma Alpha Iota Music Fraternity, the Lyric Opera League, the Independence Symphony and the Blue Ridge Bell Choir. Alice was preceded in death by husbands Glen H. Johnson, Thor Oltvedt, Maurice Draper and two brothers. She is survived by daughter Glenda Johnson and husband Robert Atkins, Kansas City, MO; grandson Gareth Shikles, San Francisco, CA; granddaughter Sherri Anderson and husband Dave, Denver, CO and great-granddaughter Nicole.
